Becoming A Professional Nature Photographer

Have you ever sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic on your morning commute to work and wished you could just be out taking pictures for a living? Perhaps you have received a great deal of encouragement from friends, family and colleagues to start your own photo business and are contemplating taking the plunge and switching careers. As a relatively recent convert to the world of photography, I’ll share some of my experiences and a few tips for any of you seriously contemplating the transition to a full-time photography business. Keep in mind that everyone has their own interests and motivations; what works for me may not work for you. The trick is to listen to others but trust your own judgment.

Kid’s Urban Photo Session

Here is a session with my kiddos from December in downtown Phoenix.  We had such a fun time, and I was happy to get some great images of my girls.  A special thank you to Erik for shooting the video with my Flip HD camera.  I love urban portrait photography because of all the different colors, textures and backgrounds you can use.  You can always find some great light downtown, too!  All of the images you see in the video were taken with my trusty 20d and 85mm f1.8 lens.  I did not use any flash, hand-held reflectors or diffusers.  For more info on how to improve your natural light photography, visit www.naturallightproject.com.  Enjoy the video!

Quick Outdoor Portrait Tip

When shooting portraits and you want to keep the focus on your subject (not the background), you’ll want to create a very shallow depth of field.  This is actually quite easy to do.  Here’s how:  switch your camera to aperture priority, and select the lowest or next to lowest f stop number.  This will allow your camera to select the proper shutter speed, and will give you a beautiful portrait with a nice out-of-focus background (and in some cases, foreground).  Take a look at my examples below, and for more photography business tips and coaching, I’ll see you over at www.shuttermomuniversity.com.  For more instruction on how to improve your natural light portrait photography, visit www.naturallightproject.com.
